Biography: When Constans II was killed by his soldiers and Magnentius usurped the purple, Vetranio, a commander on the Danube, proclaimed himself Augustus. He then decided to ally himself to Magnenitius and supported his claim, but soon had a change of heart and went over to Constantius II. In the months that followed, as Magnentius and Constantius II attempted to sort out their differences without success and then went into an armed confrontation, Vetranio decided he had little chance for success. He issued coins with the traditional inscription of Constantine's family, "By this sign you shall conquer," handed his troops over to Constantius II at Naissus, and withdrew into a honorable retirement at Prusa in Bithynia.
