Victorinus - Marcus Piavvonius Victorinus.
Mints: Colonia Agrippinensis, Gaul.
Biography: Victorinus was a high-ranking officer who has risen through the ranks under Postumus and many thought of him as the latter's successor. He took power in the breakaway Gallic state during the short interregnum after the death of Marius. Spain however, refused to recognize him, and an army loyal to Claudius II took control of the territories east of the river Rhone. The make matters worse, the Aedui of central Gaul revolted against Victorinus. It took him nearly a year to suppress the revolt, and it was late autumn of 270 when he finally captured the city of Autun. Although with a diminished territory, his polity was now stabilized, and Victorinus might have enjoyed his success longer, were it not for his being an avid womanizer. His repeated advances to the wives of his entourage finally led, in early 271, to his death at the hands of one of his officers whose wife he had accosted and perhaps raped.
