Saloninus - Publius Licinius Cornelius Valerianus (ca. AD 242 - 260):
Son of Gallienus and Salonina;
Brother of Valerian II.
AD 258 - 260 - Caesar under Valerian I and Gallienus
AD 260 Augustus with Gallienus
Mints: Antioch, Colonia Agrippinensis, Lugdunum, Rome.
Biography: Saloninus was the younger son of Gallienus. He became Caesar upon the death of his brother Valerian II and had been assigned the western provinces under the tutelage of the Praetorian Prefect Silvanus while Gallienus had to rush east to the Danube to crush the rebellions of Ingenuus and Regalianus. Salonius was stationed at Cologne. Soon after Gallienus's departure, however, Postumus, the commander of the Rhine, quarreled with Silvanus and marched on the city. It is at this time that a unique gold coin with Salunius as Augustus was struck, perhaps as an indication of Silvanus and Salonius's attempts to strengthen Salonius's position. The garrison of Cologne initially resisted, but then surrendered to the overwhelming forces of Postumus. Salonius and Silvanus were captured and put to death.
