Biography: Herennius Etruscus was the older son of the emperor Decius. Together with his younger brother, Hostilius, he was proclaimed junior emperor with the rank of Caesar, and in 250, just before Decius' death, Augustus. Decius had a major problem with the Goths in Illiricum, and Etruscus was drafted to help him mount a campaign against an invasion led by the Gothic king Cniva. The retreating Goth managed to lure the overconfident Romans into a swampy area in north-eastern Moesia and inflict a major defeat on them. Etruscus was struck down and killed by an arrow early in the battle; his father soon fell himself in what turned out to be one of the major military disasters for the third-century Empire.
