Publius Septimius Geta was the younger son of Septimius Severus and brother of Caracalla. Severus made him Caesar in 198 and Augustus in 209, eleven years after Caracalla, who was only a year older. After the death of Severus he ruled as joint emperor for about a year with Caracalla. Geta was never liked by his brother, however, and the hostility between the brothers grew by the day. In Rome they lived in separate and heavily guarded quarters. At last, Caracalla managed to convince his mother, Julia Domna, that he desires reconciliation, and Domna fell for the trick. She arranged a meeting to which the two brothers were supposed to appear unarmed and unattended. As soon as Geta appeared in her quarters, Caracalla's hidden henchmen cut him down.
