Sabina - Vibia Sabina. Wife of Hadrian; Daughter of Matidia.

Mints: Rome

Biography: Vibia Sabina was the daughter of Lucius Vibius Sabinus and Salonia Matidia, favourite niece of the Emperor Trajan and grandaughter of his sister, Ulpia Marciana. She married Hadrian in 100 at the instigation of Trajan's wife, Plotina, at the age of twelve. The marriage was instrumental I securing Hadrian's position as heir to Trajan, who had no children. The two did not get along very well, and the marriage was quite unhappy. Sabina must have a woman with a strong, independent character and ideas of marriage which did not fit well with Hadrian's inclinations to follow his sentiments and maintain an alleged love affair with one of his slave boys. She died in 136, to free Hadrian or her constant scoldings just before his own death. The rumors that he poisoned her are unsubstantiated.
