Biography: Constantius Gallus was twenty-six in 351 when his cousin, Constantius II appointed him Caesar in the middle of the confrontation with the pretender Magnentius. He then married him to Constantina Augusta and sent him east to suppress rebellions in Palestina and Isauria in south-eastern Asia Minor. Gallus acquitted himself with honor and kept the Persians at bay. However, as his methods were cruelty and wholesale murder in the provinces he pacified, word of his oppressive rule soon reached Constantius II. The emperor summoned him to Mediolanum in 354, and while still on the way west had him arrested, tried, condemned, and put to death.
