Aelius - Lucius Aelius Verus (earlier Lucius Aurelius Ceionius Commodus Verus). Adopted son and intended successor of Hadrian; Father of Lucius Verus.

Mints: Rome.

Biography: Lucius Ceionius Commodus was adopted by Hadrian in 136 as his son and heir-presumptive, and changed his name to Lucius Aelius Caesar. He was an elegant, luxurious senator in his mid-thirties. His promotion went with governorship of Panonnia. To eliminate possible opposition to the newly groomed Caesar, Hadrian had his aged brother-in-law, Julius Servianus, and his grandson murdered. Unfortunately, in January of 137 Aelius died and Hadrian adopted Antoninus Pious. Aelius's legacy remained though for Hadrian made Antoninus adopt his two sons, Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus.
